BOSTON, January 31, 2012 – James D. Julia of Fairfield, ME will be hosting a 3-Day Winter Antiques & Fine Arts Auction from February 2-4th. Each day’s events will begin at 10 a.m. Eastern, covering over 1,500 lots featuring artwork, furniture and a number of rare and exotic decorative items. One highlight of the auction is a collection of heirlooms and property belonging to the great-granddaughter of Prince Duan Aixinjueluo Zaiyi, and grandniece of the Last Emperor Puyi of China. Many items included in this collection come from the Royal Family of the Qing Dynasty, such as a Zitan table once given to Prince Duan as a gift from the Empress Dowager Cixi. Once included in the “Imperial Furnishings,” the table, made from a dense wood reserved only for use by the royal family, features delicately carved flowers and winged creatures.
Not one, but two libation cups made from rhinoceros horns are also available. The cups, highly sought after for their supposed aphrodisiacal qualities, have, along with other rhinoceros horn items, become extremely popular with collectors. Less than two years ago, James D. Julia sold a Qing Dynasty-era Tibetan Buddhist tower, carved out of rhinoceros horn, for $224,250, 11-times more than its initial estimated high.
