Artfact Live! December 2011 Auction Results Roundup

(Boston, MA) – Artfact Live! simulcast 128 auctions from 45 different auction houses to round out an exciting and successful year. Many houses had impressive sales. James D. Julia started the month off well during Day 1 of their December 1-2nd “Important Lamp & Glass auction”, selling 155 of 598 lots (25.9%) through Artfact Live!. Nine days later, 70 of 442 lots were won by online bidders during Grogan & Company’s “December Auction”; and Freeman’s of Philadelphia, PA saw a $196,000 online sale.

Ming Baitong-Mounted Huanghuali Table Cabinet
Price Realized: $13,000

A gorgeous, mint condition Ming Baiton-Mounted Huanghuali Table Cabinet sold for $13,000 at Stair Galleries’ December 3rd auction. The erroneously named “Seal Chest”, was originally built with the intention of holding small personal toiletry articles. This beautifully crafted piece of furniture, made from hunghuali, a member of the rosewood family which literally means “yellow flowering pear wood,” sold for nearly double its highest estimated price.

Chinese Haunghuali Table
Price Realized: $19,000

Stair Galleries boasted another outstanding online purchase during its December 3rd auction. Prices started low for Lot 170’s Chinese Huanghuali Table, but bidders took to this impressive furniture item and almost quadrupled its highest estimated prince of $5,000. The final realized price? A cool $19,000.

Freeman’s, “Fine American & European Paintings” – December 4, 2011
Nicolai Fechin, “Seated Female Nude”
Price Realized: $148,600

This original Nicolai Fechin oil painting, “Seated Female Nude”, was one of the most exciting pieces in Freeman’sDecember 4th auction. Initially estimated to sell for $80,000-$120,000, the painting previously owned by a private collector who purchased the painting in 1986, was sold for an impressive $145,000.

Silver-Gilt & Hardstone Box & Cover
Price Realized: CAD2,832 ($2,760)

A Chinese, silver-gilt enamel and hardstone cylindrical box and cover was sold for CAD2,832 ($2,760) at Maynard’s December 7th “Antiques & Fine Arts” Auction in the second session of a two day auction event. The box and cover, boasting a pierced, circular base with sides enclosing a green jade sleeve, is completed with intricately stamped silver. The realized price of the box and cover came in at nearly four times its estimated price.

Waddington’s, “Decorative Arts Auction” – December 14, 2011
French Champleve and Bronze Mantle Clock
Price Realized: CAD31,980 ($31,100)

At Waddington’s December 14th “Decorative Arts Auction”, a French Champleve and Bronze Mantle Clock drew a realized price of CAD31,980 ($31,000). The clock, with its mercury pendulum lying within a four-paneled case flanked by curved colonnades, sold for over ten times its original estimated price.
