Featured at Copley’s inaugural Winter Sale is a first-rate lineup of American antiques and fine art and a vast collection of sporting decoys. Highlighting session one is a painting by Arhtur Fitzwilliam Tait (1819-1905) titled “Guarding the Catch”. The painting, estimated $125,000-$175,000, is signed by the artist and depicts a black dog watching over an absent fisherman’s catch of the day. Copley Chairman and Fine Art specialist Stephen O’Brien, Jr. notes, “It is one of the most important American dog paintings that we have ever had the privilege to bring to market.”
Session two of Copley’s Winter Sale will feature two hundred and thirty decoy lots by renowned craftsmen such as A. Elmer Crowell, Lee Dudley, Albert Laing, Joseph Lincoln, and John Tax, in addition to thirty lots of assorted sporting books from the collection of H. Wendell Endicott. The painting, originally purchased in 1880 by Colonel Henry and Elizabeth Perkins Lee, was passed down through four generations of the family prior to current consignment. Estimated $350,000-$450,000, the watercolor shows Homer at his best in portraying children and is being offered to the public for the first time in over a century.
